'The Jazprose Art Drop'
A one-minute (or less) weekly 'culture hit' curated by Jazprose.
Today, I’m launching something new you can view on your phone or tablet without investing more than a minute of your day. I’m calling it the Jazprose Art Drop. Think of it as a “culture hit.” A morsel of beauty you can wolf down like trail mix when you’re on the go.
I’m able to do this because several major museums have made their digital catalogs available to the public free-of-charge online. Sometimes it only takes a brief reminder that there’s more to life than the rude, the crude, and the ugly. There’s beauty in it too. And we need that, don’t we?
For years, I’ve received daily art calendars from the world’s museums as Christmas gifts. I really like being able to see something beautiful on my desk when I start the day.
And I’m excited to share quick hits of those art gems—as well as music, poetry, and photography here on Substack. To keep it short and sweet, these pieces will not include audio narration.
I’ll still be publishing The Jazprose Diaries and The Fiction Fix.
This “culture hit” idea is what people in New Orleans call lagniappe—something extra.

Today’s “art drop” is Woman before an Aquarium (Fish Bowl), 1922, by one of my favorite artists Henri Matisse. I hope you like it and will share it with others.
If you want to know why Matisse is important, there’s a 60-second clip below. You might also want to check out this link to the description at the Art Institute of Chicago where this little painting lives.
Thanks for reading. And please let me know how you feel about the lagniappe.
See you next time.

Love the idea and most importantly the execution. Thank you. I, too, love Matisse.
I Love the one-minute culture hit. What a great idea! We all need a little beauty in our lives these days. Looking at this painting, I can’t help but wonder what she is thinking.
