Thanks for this. I was immediately reminded of the Readers Digest story when I was reading it. Was glad when the connection was made. Thanks for a beautiful story and a reminder to "stop" and pay attention and not assume anything about our fellow humans.
Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts. As I mentioned to Jeff’s father, that brief meeting with his son on the dock has stayed with me all these years. I’m glad to have another opportunity to tell it again to a different audience. Nice to know you remember the original and really grateful that you took time to read this updated version.
Thank you so much for bringing life to Jeffs story. It's been over 36 years now since that fateful day August 3rd, 1985.
Jeff has come a long way since that time.
He has gained lessons in life, despite limitations, sometimes life has been painful for him physically and mentally..
But thats what makes him the gentle soul he is, and always has been.. All of the life's experiences, the pain, the agony, the love made him the man he is today. He was always special since the day he was born. We never knew just how special that life would become.
Time is marching on forn Jeff now.
He will continue to live in Friday Harbor , San Juan Island for many more years, probably for the remainder of his life.
It provides him security and comfort knowing the people there accept him for who he is in his heart. Hopefully those who continue to stare, laugh, insult and miss label him will somehow be re- educated and discover the wonderful human being Jeff teally is.
It's been a rough road for his mother and I also, as we shared every moment of what Jeff has been through.
His mother Sandra left us in 2006, may she rest in peace.
I guide Jeff alone now through these years, and hope that one day he will understand and appreciate the full value of his life.
He has carried the cross that God gave him in this life with courage and acceptance.
He is God's gift to me as his father, and given a chance, he will be a blessing to all those who meet and appreciate him as a friend.
Thank you again Andrew, for shining a light on Jeff's life.
Thank you, Bob, for your kind response to my updated story about that encounter with Jeff years ago. I admire you greatly and was really glad to learn of your own role in Jeff's recovery. I'm sorry for the loss of your wife even as I hear now of her courage too during those incredibly difficult years. I've written many stories over the course of my life, but for some reason that encounter with Jeff has stayed with me. It's been an honor and a privilege to shine a light on his life. And I thank you sincerely for sharing the greatness of your heart. Best wishes to you and your family.
Thanks so much for reading. I’m really glad you liked it.
Andrew, absolutely amazing story!
Thanks so much for reading it. I’m glad you liked it. As someone who’s sailed, you surely understand how special that experience was.
Karl and I sailed on Lake Lanier for many years. I love the story of humanity. Thank you!

Such a beautiful story. So typical of your work. Thank you for this.
Thanks so much. I’m glad to know it resonated with you. And I thoroughly appreciate your generous and ongoing encouragement. It means a lot.
